According to the Wikipedia, printing was invented twice, first in China, and second in medieval Europe. According to some sources, the book printing in China began in 581 AD, according to other reports it was between 936-993 AD. The exact date of the first printing text dates back to 868 AD. It was a Chinease xylography copy of the Buddhist Diamond sutra.
