A commemorative event dedicated to the victims of the Khojaly tragedy was held at the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The event began with a minute of silence in honor of the victims who lost their lives in the horrific Khojaly genocide on February 26, 1992.
Then, Academician Rasim Alguliyev, the Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Director General of the Institute of Information Technology under the Ministry of Science and Education, delivered a speech and stated that the Khojaly tragedy was one of the most brutal and merciless crimes committed against humanity in the 20th century.
The scholar noted that in this horrific tragedy, 613 people were brutally killed, including 63 children, 70 elderly individuals, and 106 women who were murdered with particular cruelty, and 8 families were completely wiped out. In total, the fate of 150 people who went missing remains unknown to this day.
The academician, providing insight into the complex socio-political conditions and realities of that period, highlighted the main causes of the tragedy. He noted that in the early 1990s, against the backdrop of the collapse of Soviet rule, the strengthening of the national liberation movement in the country, the absence of political stability, and the deliberate escalation of interethnic tensions were among the key factors that led to the Khojaly tragedy.
Academician Rasim Alguliyev emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to reveal the essence of the Khojaly tragedy and to make the perpetrators known to the world. He noted that conveying the truths about this tragedy to future generations in an objective manner is an important duty of every citizen.
The scholar stated that today, under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani state has fully restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty. He noted that as a result of the consistent and purposeful policies implemented, the republic has entered a new stage of development.
The academician emphasized that recently the country’s international standing has increased significantly and that Azerbaijan is regarded as a reliable partner both regionally and globally.
Then, at the meeting, the institute’s staff members—Associate Professor Shafagat Mahmudova; Irada Alakbarova, PhD in Technology; Gulnara Nabibayova, PhD in Technology; Chairman of the Trade Union Committee Anar Samidov; and Chair of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists Dilbar Alizade—delivered speeches emphasizing that the Khojaly tragedy is one of the most horrific events engraved in the historical memory of the Azerbaijani people.
They stated that the massacre was a grave and heinous crime committed against civilians, contradicting universal human values. It was stressed that this atrocity should be regarded not only as a crime against one nation but as a tragedy directed against humanity as a whole and as a flagrant violation of international law.
Afterwards, the leadership and staff of the Institute of Information Technology visited the “Mother's Cry” memorial. They put flowers at the memorial, erected in Khatai district, Baku, and honored the memory of the genocide victims.
