The institute conducts research in the field of digital forensics

The Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education has held its next departmental seminar.  At the event, the institute’s PhD candidate Sanan Valizade delivered a presentation titled “The necessity of investigating existing problems in the field of digital forensics.”

The speaker noted that the rapid development of information technologies is causing an increase in violations occurring in the digital environment, which in turn demands the development of new approaches for the collection, preservation, and analysis of digital evidence. He emphasized that digital forensics both preserves the principles of traditional forensics and relies on entirely new methods and tools suitable for the digital environment.

The researcher stated that digital forensics occupies an important place in the national security strategies of leading states worldwide. He noted that digital forensics is highly developed and innovative approaches are applied in countries such as the United States, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and Israel, and he provided extensive information about the experience of these countries.

S. Valizade highlighted the technological, legal, ethical, organizational and institutional, training and teaching, and scientific-methodological aspects of digital forensics and spoke about the problems encountered in each of these areas. He noted that scientific and theoretical research in the field of digital forensics has undergone dynamic changes over the past 25 years in parallel with technological advancements.

The speaker also spoke about Azerbaijan’s national cybersecurity priorities, stating that the “Information Security and Cybersecurity Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2023–2027” defines specific directions related to the collection of digital evidence and the application of intelligent analysis methods. He added that the shortage of qualified specialists, the limited methodological approaches, and the existing scientific-theoretical gaps in the country necessitate the further development of this field.

Discussions were held on the topic, and questions were addressed.

At the seminar, Academician Rasim Alguliyev, Vice-President of ANAS and Director General of the institute, emphasized the relevance of the topic and assessed research conducted in the field of digital forensics as an important direction aligned with the institute’s activity priorities. He noted that consistent and goal-oriented measures are being implemented in our country to ensure digital development, strengthen the cybersecurity ecosystem, and enhance information security.

The Director General emphasized the importance of extensively analyzing the concepts of objects and subjects in cybercrime, their functional features, and mutual relations within a scientific framework, and he recommended preparing a scientific paper in this direction.

The scholar added that strengthening scientific and theoretical research in the field of digital forensics in the country will make an important contribution both to effectively addressing modern cybersecurity challenges and to training highly qualified specialists.
