Presentation on the standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics was heard

A presentation on the topic "Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE): Its Essence and Publishing Standards" was delivered at the scientific seminar of the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education.

The presentation was given by Dilbar Alizade, an employee of the Institute, who provided information on the history, objectives, areas of activity, and significance of COPE for scientific journals.

D. Alizade stated that the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 in London, United Kingdom. The main goal of the organization is to establish ethical standards for scientific journals and publishers, prevent ethical violations, and ensure transparency in the publishing process.

The speaker drew special attention to COPE's document titled "Core Practices." She mentioned that this document defines the key ethical principles for member journals: "Authorship ethics, data accuracy, conflict of interest prevention, complaint and appeal procedures, editorial responsibility, and scientific integrity are among these principles."

She stated that over 15,000 journals and publishers had become COPE members by 2025 and emphasized that prestigious international publishers such as Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Oxford University Press are also among the organization's members. The speaker discussed the significance of COPE membership for journals, including increased international credibility, support in resolving ethical issues, a clear framework for shaping editorial policies, access to training and resources, priority in the indexing process, as well as ensuring transparency for authors and readers.

D. Alizade also provided detailed information on several important COPE documents, including the "Code of Conduct" for editors, "Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers," "Retraction Guidelines," flowcharts for investigating ethical violations, and joint documents that define principles of transparency.

Discussions were held regarding the presentation, and the participants' questions were answered.
