Today marks the 105th anniversary of the birth of Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh, the world-renowned scientist and founder of fuzzy set theory (FST) and fuzzy logic.
Lotfi Rahim oglu Alaskarzadeh was born on February 4, 1921, in Baku and completed his primary education at Secondary School No. 16. In 1932, the Alaskarzadeh family was forced to relocate to their ancestral homeland in South Azerbaijan. After completing his secondary education there, Lotfi Zadeh enrolled in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tehran. Following his successful graduation, he moved to the United States at the age of 23 to continue his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was there that the foundations of six major theories for which he later gained worldwide recognition were laid.
Professor L. Zadeh earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University between 1944 and 1959. From 1959, he worked at the University of California, Berkeley, and from 1963, he headed the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. He served at the university as a lifetime professor and as Director of the Soft Computing Institute.
The Azerbaijani scientist gained worldwide recognition for his theory of fuzzy logic, which has been widely applied in industry and is also regarded as a revolution in global science. This theory introduced a new interpretation of the binary set concept, which forms the foundation of mathematics: the fuzzy set. The introduction of fuzzy measurement into science made it possible to account more adequately for the uncertainty inherent in processes occurring in nature and society.
The world-renowned scientist visited Baku for the last time in November 2008 to participate in the “BakuTel” International Telecommunications and Information Technologies Exhibition and Conference. L. Zadeh attended the event held at the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), where he was awarded an honorary diploma in recognition of his contributions to science.
He was the only individual to be appointed as a lifetime professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Professor Lotfi Zadeh passed away at the age of 96 on September 6, 2017, in the state of California, USA. In accordance with his will, his body was brought to Azerbaijan and laid to rest in the First Alley of Honor.
It should be noted that in 2021, in accordance with a decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the 100th anniversary of the prominent scientist Lotfi Zadeh was celebrated.
