On April 27, 2019, the first stage of the "Republican Olympiad in Informatics among university students" was held at the Baku Engineering University jointly with the Ministry of Transport, Communication and High Technologies, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Education and the Institute of Information Technology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The main goal of the Olympiad, held on the  World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, is to promote students' knowledge and skills in the area of information and programming, as well as involve selected students in international competitions.

Registration of teams representing universities of the Republic was carried out on the site www.olimpiada.az within one month prior to the first stage of the two-stage Olympiad. Each team consisted of 1 teacher (supervisor) and 3 students (bachelors). A maximum of 4 teams per universities were admitted to the first stage of the Olympics.

Over the past 12 years, 40 to 50 teams (160 to 200 participants) of the 15-20 universities have joined the first stage every year. This year, 69 teams from 24 universities across the country have won the right to participate in the competition.  Along with the capital, the universities of Ganja, Mingachevir, Nakhchivan, Sumgayit and Lankaran State Universities, Azerbaijan Technological University as well as the Azerbaijan State Agrarian University are particularly interested in this year's Olympiad.

The competition is held on the rules of international "ACM / ICPC" (International Olympiad in Informatics among university students). According to the rules, only one team showing the best result for each educational institution will qualify for the final stage of the Olympiad, and the best four teams will be announced as winners.

Winners (I-IV places) will be awarded valuable prizes from Azercell operator and BestComp Group, as well as honorary certificates and diplomas of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and High Technologies.

The final stage will be held on May 4, 2019, at the Institute of Information Technology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
