A presentation on the topic "Discipline and scientific ethics in scientific activity" was delivered at a scientific seminar held by the Institute of Information Technology under the Ministry of Science and Education.
Speaking at the event, Dilbar Alizade, an employee of the Institute's Department of Scientific Information and Scientometrics, stated that scientific ethics is the set of moral and behavioral principles that researchers and scientists must adhere to during scientific activity. According to her, adherence to these principles serves to preserve the reliability of the scientific community while ensuring the objectivity and transparency of scientific research.
The speaker elaborated on the role of ethics in scientific activity, addressing the importance of data integrity, the protection of copyright and intellectual property, objective peer review, and adherence to ethical norms in experiments.
Speaking about the historical development stages of scientific ethics, D. Alizade recalled the "The Normative Structure of Science" norm put forward by American sociologist Robert K. Merton in 1942 and noted that its principles of "Communalism," "Universalism," "Disinterestedness," and "Organized skepticism"—remain relevant today.
D. Alizade also discussed the ethical priorities of 21st-century science, including Open Science, avoidance of conflicts of interest, ethical responsibility, and sustainability, as well as the principles of objectivity, honesty, and transparency.
The speaker noted that preventing incidents such as plagiarism, duplicate publication, and fraudulent authorship, as well as adhering to the principles of fair authorship and correct citation, are among the core requirements of scientific ethics.
Following the presentation, Director General of the Institute of Information Technology under the Ministry of Science and Education, Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Rasim Alguliyev spoke about the importance of adhering to scientific ethics requirements during research.
Academician Alguliyev further added that the Institute of Information Technology places special emphasis on the principles of ethical conduct, discipline, and transparency across all stages of scientific activity. The scientist emphasized that holding such educational seminars is important for the formation of scientific culture and the profound understanding of scientific ethics principles among young researchers.
