The article titled “Cyber-physical systems and their security issues” (DOI: 10.1016/j.compind.2018.04.017) co-authored by academician-secretary of ANAS, director of the Institute of Information Technology, academician Rasim Alguliyev, head of department, doctor of technical sciences, associate professor Yadigar Imamverdiyev and senior research fellow , PhD on technical sciences Lyudmila Sukhostat was published in the "Computers in Industry" journal published by “Elsevier”.
Although the concept of "cyber-physical system" emerged in 2006, it has recently begun to conduct intensive research in a number of advanced countries. The relevance and prospect of research and development in the field of cyber-physical systems also demonstrates the development of specific road maps in the US and Europe.
Creating cyber-physical systems puts new challenges ahead of humanity. Usually, applications of such systems are of critical importance, and therefore special requirements for their safety and reliability are introduced. The protection of cyber-physical systems from a wide spectrum of cyber-attacks is one of the complex problems of information security.
The article outlines the working principles of cyber-physical systems, their multidisciplinary social, philosophical problems are highlighted, and analysis and classification of current research on cyber-physical systems security is underway. Authors offer a special attack tree model for systematic analysis of attacks and threats to cyber-physical systems. Key challenges and expectations from researchers are related to the evaluation of cyber-attack outcomes, modeling and detection of cyber-attacks, and the development of appropriate cyber-security architectures. Key trends of future research on cyber-physical-social systems, SCADA systems, intelligent security, cyber-attack countermeasures and communications security are shown.
