Capabilities of learning management systems researched

The next scientific seminar devoted to the theme "Study of the possibilities of learning management systems existing in foreign countries" was held at the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS.

Tarana Majidova, the employee of department, stated that the main goal of the Learning Management System (LMS) is to improve teaching methodology, didactics, level of information support and management of teaching resources. She introduced the components of the e-learning system, gave information about the software of the system. The software belongs to authoring systems, teaching, content and content management systems, she noted.

She spoke about the advantages of LMS and noted that it has access to information from anywhere. Besides, it has advantages such as reducing educational costs, keeping individual courses and curriculum, keeping content together, conducting an easy monitoring of students' effective reading and so on.

LMS has functionality, reliability, stability, support for the "SCORM" standard, accessibility, scalability and expansion capabilities, she said and spoke about the basic functions of this system.  According to her, the system provides interface for interaction between teaching process and teacher, students, develops educational programs, monitors their passage, reports the outcomes of learning, provides necessary tools for organizing relationships between students and teachers, listeners are placed in groups for submission of general courses and reports, additional elements of teaching are integrated, and the necessary protection mechanisms for the e-learning network environment.

She also gave detailed information about the "Moodle", "ILIAS", "Atutor", "Chamilo", "Claroline", "Dokeos", "SAKAI" and other LMSs, which are freely used.

At the end of seminar, she talked about mobile devices offered by LMS, support for different standards, built-in social tools, cloud solutions, integration of different forms of content, and adaptability.
