A regular scientific seminar dedicated to the discussion of the scientific results presented in the dissertation titled "Development of methods and algorithms for detecting cybersecurity threats in texts" was held at the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education.
AZERTAC reports that Vusal Shahbazov, a doctoral student at the institute, delivered a presentation on his dissertation and provided information on the relevance, aim, scientific novelty, tasks, and key findings of his research. He emphasized that strategic measures implemented in the field of cybersecurity in Azerbaijan highlight the relevance of the dissertation. In this regard, the Strategy on Information Security and Cybersecurity for 2023–2027, the Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2025–2028, and the Digital Development Concept, approved by relevant decrees of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, serve as key benchmarks defining the significance of the study.
The researcher added that the rapid expansion of digital transformation, alongside the surge in text-based cyberattacks and AI-generated fake content, necessitates the development of highly effective methods and algorithms for detecting cybersecurity threats in textual data.
Vusal Shahbazov noted that the main objective of the dissertation is to develop high-accuracy methods and algorithms based on natural language processing (NLP) technologies to detect cybersecurity threats in text.
Presenting his research findings, the doctoral student stated that the study systematized the types of text-based cyber threats, identified detection methods, and highlighted existing theoretical and practical challenges in the field.
Furthermore, the researcher leveraged large language models to detect spam emails and achieved high accuracy by developing a hybrid method for SMS message classification.
Speaking on the dissertation, Vice-President of ANAS, Director General of the Institute, Academician Rasim Alguliyev emphasized the importance of a systematic presentation of the methodological foundations and scientific novelty of the study. The scientist highlighted the necessity of a deeper investigation into the unresolved problems within the dissertation work, precise definition of the research goals and tasks, and offered several recommendations.
