The implementation and expansion of eduroam (education roaming), one of the advanced technological services provided by GÉANT, through AzScienceNet in the country’s research institutes and higher education institutions is of significant importance for accelerating the integration of Azerbaijan’s scientific and academic environment into the European research and education area. Recently, staff of the AzScienceNet Network Operations Center at the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education successfully connected the network infrastructures of Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) and Nakhchivan State University (NSU) to the National Eduroam Server located in the Data Center of the AzScienceNet science-computing network.
As part of a visit to Nakhchivan State University from April 29 to May 2, 2025, Babak Nabiyev, Head of the AzScienceNet Network Operations Center and PhD in Technology, together with Orkhan Mansimzade, Chief Specialist, carried out a series of technical works to strengthen the university’s modern network infrastructure. During the visit, alongside the installation of the “Lola” system, the international Eduroam service was successfully implemented at the university. This initiative not only further strengthens Nakhchivan State University’s integration into global research and education networks but also enables students and faculty to access secure, convenient, and uninterrupted Internet connectivity during domestic and international travels.
At the same time, a number of significant steps have been taken to establish Wi-Fi and eduroam services at AzTU and NSU. With the technical support of the AzScienceNet Network Operations Center, faculty members and students of both universities have access to high-level network technologies and services that meet international standards. As a result, academic staff from both universities have gained access to eduroam services provided by the GÉANT and have been more effectively integrated into the local and international research environment.
It should be noted that eduroam is an international roaming service that provides scientists, researchers, teachers, and students with secure and free Internet access. Users connected to this service can access free and secure wireless Internet at thousands of research and educational institutions, both within the country and abroad. Currently, the eduroam service is used by more than 6,000 education and research institutions in 106 countries worldwide and is active across over 38,000 institutions in total.
Today, the eduroam service is available in 35 organizations across Azerbaijan. Relevant efforts are ongoing to introduce this service in other research institutions and higher education establishments.
