Academician Rasim Alguliyev: “Digital transformations and the development of artificial intelligence necessitate the training of highly qualified engineers”

Academician Rasim Alguliyev, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and Director General of the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education, delivered a speech at an event dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU).

On behalf of the Azerbaijani scientific community, the scientist first greeted the university’s leadership and faculty, as well as all graduates and students, congratulated everyone on the occasion of AzTU’s 75th anniversary, and expressed his satisfaction at participating in this noteworthy jubilee event.

The Vice President of ANAS stated that since its establishment, AzTU has followed an honorable and rich path of development, emphasizing that both during the Soviet era and the years of independence, the university’s main mission has been to serve the state and society by training highly qualified engineering personnel for various sectors of industry.

In his speech, Academician Rasim Alguliyev noted that AzTU has undergone two major stages of renaissance over its 75-year history. The scientist emphasized that following the coming to power of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, consistent and purposeful measures were implemented to build an industrial society in Azerbaijan.  The establishment of the Baku Household Air-Conditioners Plant, the Radio Factory, the Electronic Computing Machines Plant, the Ulduz Plant, and other manufacturing enterprises laid the foundation for a new technological stage in the country.

“The measures implemented in this area and the newly emerging technological realities made it necessary to train highly qualified engineering and technical personnel capable of meeting the demands of industry,” said the academician. He stated that during this period, AzTU also entered a phase of rapid development, becoming one of the country’s leading higher education institutions in shaping its industrial and technological potential.

Academician Rasim Alguliyev stated that following the return to power of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, stability was ensured in the country and Azerbaijan was saved from the threat of civil war. According to the Director General of the Institute, in line with ongoing global technological processes, Azerbaijan adopted the "National Strategy on Information and Communication Technologies for the Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan" in 2003. The academician noted that during that period, AzTU became one of the leading higher education institutions in training specialists in computer engineering, telecommunications, satellite communications, and other high-tech fields, describing this stage as the university’s second renaissance.

The Vice-President of ANAS emphasized that under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, ensuring the country’s sovereignty, implementing development strategies that respond to global challenges, accelerating digital transformation processes, and advancing artificial intelligence have created favorable conditions for enhancing the prestige of the engineering profession and increasing the demand for highly qualified specialists in this field.

“Today, the extensive use of modern technologies in public administration and the activities of various institutions imposes new tasks and responsibilities on engineers,” said Academician Rasim Alguliyev. He noted that in the context of transforming Azerbaijan’s realities into digital platforms, the remarks made by President Ilham Aliyev at ANAS’s 80th anniversary event are particularly relevant. In his speech and in the strategic documents adopted recently, the Head of State highlighted the importance of training specialists in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and cybersecurity.

The academician highly praised the work carried out at AzTU in expanding international cooperation, establishing specialized centers, and implementing other strategic projects.
