Hopper was born Grace Murray Hopper on December 9, 1906 in New York City. She graduated Vassar college in 1928 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics and earned her master's degree at Yale University in 1930. In 1934, she earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale.
A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, and invented the first compiler for a computer programming language.She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first high level programming languages.
She died in 1992, aged 85.
