Xiaomi introduced record-breaking fast charging power of 100 watts

The company talked about the features and complexity of charging a smartphone at such a record power.

100 W fast charging was announced back in November last year, but only now, Xiaomi Vice President and Redmi Brand Manager Liu Weibing shared the details of the technology.

According to  hi-tech.mail.ru, the technology is called Suer Charger Turbo, and it will appear first in the flagship Redmi smartphones. The company promises to use a 100-watt charge to fully charge a smartphone with a 4000 mAh battery in just 17 minutes.

At the same time, the technology has several difficulties that will have to be sacrificed for speed. Due to the nature of the technology, the actual capacity of any battery will be reduced by 20%. For example, a 100-watt charge can resemble a 5000 mAh battery at only 4000 mAh. Therefore, smartphones with such charging will not work as long on a single charge as they could.

I also had to implement additional security measures. To implement the charging of such power, it was necessary to significantly increase the voltage and add several protective mechanisms from overheating and shorting the battery, the motherboard and the power supply itself.

The company did not talk about this, but most likely in the final implementation of the technology, smartphones will not constantly charge with a power of 100 watts. It is not always necessary to charge a smartphone in half an hour, therefore, in all modern devices, power supplies drop current with variable power, adapting to the user's habits.
