Modern artificial intelligence systems are not only capable of processing photos and talking with the owners about the weather - they are already ready to perform tasks that a couple of years ago seemed fantastic. Developers from the USA taught AI to get a high-quality image of an object, even if it is out of line of sight.
According to 4pda.ru, a team of scientists from Princeton, Stanford and other US universities has developed a computer vision system that can "look" around the corner. To do this, artificial intelligence uses a laser, the beam of which is reflected from the visible surface and hits an object hidden behind an obstacle. After that, it is reflected back to the wall, creating an interference pattern in which the image of the observed object is “encoded”.
Deep learning algorithms were used for complex calculations. During the experiments, the technology developers were able to "read" numbers and letters that are outside the field of view of observers, as well as obtain their high-quality images in real time.
According to Professor Christopher Metzler, who leads the research, the technology allows you to read the license plate number of the car or the text on the badge of a person who is around the corner. In the future, the new development can be widely used in various fields - from medicine to robotics. Skeptics of the project already note that with the development of such systems to maintain confidentiality, “counter-technologies” will be needed to create rooms that are completely protected from laser radiation.
