Created a mobile application to search for dangerous objects in the engine

The Rolls-Royce Defense Aerospace division, which also supplies engines for combat aircraft, has developed a new mobile application to solve the problem, designed to solve the problem of garbage getting into the engines. Using a smartphone with the application installed, it will be possible to assess the degree of threat of this or that garbage for the aircraft power plants.

Even small debris scattered on the runway poses a threat to aircraft when it enters engines. And if this does not lead to disaster, then expensive repairs after such incidents can not be avoided. The order for the application came from the command of the Air Force of the US Navy (the project was funded by the US Marine Corps). Now, any employee of the aviation division will be able to quickly understand whether a particular object is dangerous for the aircraft.

Using a camera, a smartphone scans a suspicious object, calculates its approximate dimensions, and the received data with reference to GPS coordinates are sent for analysis to a central database. Experts, having studied the information, in online mode report whether a particular garbage poses a threat to the engine or not.

The new application is the first digital service Rolls-Royce Defense Aerospace intends to offer its customers. The US Navy expects that the implementation of this solution will reduce the cost of repairing aircraft due to the ingress of foreign objects into their engines. US naval aviation spends about $ 100 million annually to resolve such problems.
