Artificial intelligence is one of the most important areas of development for the global IT industry. The German research company IPlytics recently found out which company is leading in this fast-growing field, at least in the number of registered patents.
As of January 2019, Microsoft ranked first in the number of patented AI technologies, with 18,365 related patent applications. Another American IT giant - IBM - is located on the second line: there are 15046 patents in its assets. South Korean Samsung - in the third position with a score of 11243.
In total, there are five American companies in the top 10, among which are also Qualcomm (4th place, 10178 AI patents) and Google (5th place, 9536). In addition, there are two representatives from Japan in the top ten - Sony (8th place, 5526) and Canon (10th, 3996), and one each from South Korea, the Netherlands (Philips, 6th place) and Germany (Siemens, 7 e place).
Also, experts have calculated that the total number of patents in the field of AI for 10 years has more than tripled - from 22913 in 2008 to 78085 in 2018.
The South Korean edition of The Investor notes that Samsung, the leader in the global smartphone market, is rapidly promoting innovations in the AI sphere, developing various applications with artificial intelligence elements for smartphones and other electronics. Earlier, Samsung said that by 2020 all the devices manufactured by the company will have some form of AI.
