Wikipedia launches news website to combat the rise of ‘alternative facts’

The founder of the open Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia Jimmy Wales is launching a new project aimed at combating unreliable and false news.

The focus will be on verifying published facts and collecting information on sources. "For the first time professional journalists and ordinary citizens can work together on an equal footing, write about events as they occur, edit them online with the support of a whole community that will check and recheck the facts," Jimmy Wales explained.

The site is its own project, it will contain news materials and transcripts of various interviews. Before publication, journalists will be required to provide sources of information, as well as records (including audio) on which they base their materials. Editing texts will be available to all members of the community, but before the revised version is submitted for public review, it should be checked by moderators.

Wales stressed that the project will be free for everyone, and his business model is based on monthly donations. In the future, the most active participants in the fundraising campaign will be able to offer interesting topics to journalists (their staff is planned to be completed by June). According to Jimmy Wales, Wikitribune will adhere to a neutral form of news feed.
