Bioengineers from the United States have developed a wireless “smart” dressing that can deliver drugs to a non-healing wound and accelerate the treatment of chronic wounds, according to the University of Connecticut press service.

Chronic wounds are wounds that do not heal for a long time, even despite appropriate therapy. Such wounds occur, for example, as one of the complications of diabetes. These include pressure sores, trophic ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers.

A new dressing developed by scientists from the University of Connecticut, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Harvard Medical School can help treat chronic wounds. It is equipped with miniature needles printed on a 3D printer. These needles are able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the wound, without bringing severe pain to the patient and without causing inflammation. In this case, the bandage does not need to be constantly changed.

According to nanonewsnet.ru, an electronic device - a smart platform - is attached to the dressing, with which you can adjust the dosage and the moment of release of the drug, which is delivered through tiny needles.

The development was tested first on cells, and then on mice with diabetes, in which the disease caused skin damage. Thanks to the “smart” dressing, the mice showed signs of complete wound healing - without scarring.
