A court in Shenzhen, China, ruled that articles written by artificial intelligence (AI) were protected by copyright. This is "the first recognition of AI as an independent creative unit."

The court decision touched the texts of Tencent, which over the past five years has been publishing software content called Dreamwriter. Usually these are materials that relate to business and finance. In 2018, the Yingxun Technology Company’s online platform reproduced Tencent AI-generated text on its website. It contained a disclaimer for the publication, which stated that the text was written automatically and without the participation of the authors.

According to hightech.fm, the court found that the wording of the material and its expression were original. Therefore, the material can be classified as a written work and it is protected by copyright.

Tencent is not the only company that publishes journalistic content written using algorithms. Associated Press uses AI to publish sports news and some business material. Chicago-based Narrative Science uses AI to create business intelligence related content.

Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can already generate quite convincing text that will look like a human one. Scientists worry that this will become a new way to produce fake news. However, AI can now detect fake texts written by AI.
