Russian surgeons tested a new method for closing wounds December 09, 2019 | 04:53 / Interesting information

Employees of the forecast laboratory of the P.A. Herzen, a branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Scientific Research Center for Radiology, Ministry of Health of Russia, together with 3D Bioprinting Solutions, conducted a unique experiment on implant bioprinting to replace skin defects (wound closure).

According to meddaily.ru, the operation is not only remarkable for the use of bioprinting technology, but also for the fact that the implant was printed right on the spot during the operation in the laboratory of preclinical studies of the P.A. Herzen. The approach was tested on rodents for several weeks.

Printing was done directly into the wound using the KUKA robot manipulator. That is, printing was carried out not on a horizontal surface, as often happens, but at a certain angle to fill the defect of irregular shape. As a bioprinter ink, we used specially developed collagen material from the 3D Bioprinting Solutions laboratory.
