A ship weighing 2 tons was printed on a 3D printer October 14, 2019 | 10:40 / Interesting information

A seven-meter ship weighing 2.2 tons was printed on a 3D printer. This is the largest object that has ever been printed, and it took 72 hours to produce.

The Center for Advanced Designs at the University of Maine broke two Guinness world records - scientists created the world's largest prototype 3D polymer printer and printed the largest object using solid 3D printing on it - a ship weighing 2.2 tons.

They plan to expand their activities - the printer is capable of printing objects up to 30 m long, 6.7 m wide and 3 m high.

Researchers plan to commercialize their activities: they will print ships using plastic and wood.

“Maine is the most wooded state in the country, and now we have a 3D printer to use this rich resource,” the researchers noted. They also raised $ 20 million for research aimed at creating new biomaterials suitable for 3D printing of large objects.
