Drivers who have to spend long hours driving a car know how dangerous a short-term sleep caused by fatigue can be during driving. Russian scientists have developed a special application that will help not to fall asleep while driving and warn of danger.

Drive Safely is a complete system for identifying signs of drowsiness and reduced driver attention. It helps to concentrate and constantly generates tips based on the situation on the road and the state of the user.

Before operation, the smartphone application must be mounted on the windshield of the car. Drive Safely works in parallel with navigators like Yandex.Maps or Google Maps, and does not interfere with messages or calls. Using a front-facing camera, Drive Safely evaluates the head position and driver’s degree of openness. If dangerous signs are detected, the application will begin to notify the driver of the danger.

“A similar system is currently being developed at Yandex for a special infrared camera. A distinctive feature of our program was the use of a smartphone, which today everyone has and does not require any additional equipment to be installed in the car, ”said Drive Safely application developers.

St. Petersburg developers translated the main signs of driver fatigue into numerical parameters, determining the angle of inclination of the head and the percentage of eye openness. Additionally, Drive Safely analyzes the vehicle’s speed and cornering, warning the user about the need to look towards the maneuver.
