LRO works like a scanner, building an image line by line, using the movement of a spacecraft above the surface of the moon. Laser pulses are used to determine the size of the moon. They reach the surface of the moon and are reflected from the spacecraft. Then the device measures the time required to return the beam, thus reading the topography of the moon. Using data and images from LRO, NASA experts recreated the Moon in unprecedented detail. The goal of the project was to make NASA data more accessible to 3D designers. An accurate moon topography is also needed to prepare for a safer landing for future missions.
