At the next meeting of the Scientific Board of the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS, the prospects for further cooperation on the EaPConnect project were discussed.  The event was attended by GEANT International Projects Manager Veronika Di Luna, Research Engagement Officer Chris Atherton, Procurement Specialist Rita Mažeikaitė as well as, members of the Scientific Board of the Institute.

Academician Rasim Alguliyev, vice-president of ANAS, director of the Institute, spoke about the importance of EaPConnect (Eastern Partnership Connect) project, which was initiated and coordinated by the Association of Science and Education Networks of Europe (GEANT), which unites the countries of the Eastern Partnership.

He noted that the project aims to create an e-science infrastructure covering Eastern Partnership countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) and provides high-speed Internet access to research and educational institutions operating in these countries.

R. Alguliyev informed about the 5th Eastern Partnership E-Infrastructure Conference (EaPEC 2020), to be held in Azerbaijan in 2020. The conference is organized with the aim of coordinating the research and education community in the European Union and Eastern Partnership countries within the EaPConnect project. He noted that holding of the conference in Azerbaijan opens great opportunities for scientists and specialists of our country and the institute will closely participate in the organization of the conference.

Later on, GEANT's international project manager, Veronika Di Luna, made a presentation on "EaPConnect - Overview."

She noted that the main goal of the coordinator of the EaPConnect project, GEANT,  financially supported by the European Commission, is to eliminate the digital divide, improve mutual relations across the region and facilitate the participation of local scholars, students and adherents in global research and education.

The speaker presented a map of the countries joining GEANT, gave detailed information about the association's projects. She also introduced the financial resources allocated to the Eastern Partnership countries by submitting a financial report covering 2018.

V. Di Luna presented the rating on the use of traffic by the countries and the list of workshops organized by GEANT.

Then, researcher engagement officer at GEANT Chris Atherton made a presentation on "User engagement and support" and gave detailed information on the advantages of connecting users to the network.

Our main goal is to make access to information not only at the national level but also internationally, " he said. The reporter underlined that they had achieved the solution of the problem through the exchange of information between researchers conducting research on e-infrastructure, geosciences, natural sciences and other areas.

He also introduced the process of interaction with users. C. Atherton talked about cooperation between various organizations, including CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research), CLARIN, gave detailed information on the Copernicus project financed and managed by the European Commission.
