Scientists invented the nano- backpack for bees December 13, 2018 | 11:16 / Technological innovations

Scientists from the University of Washington decided as probes for science and agriculture to use the bees. For this purpose, they invented tiny nano-backpacks that are attached to the backs of insects.

The special sensor backpack has such dimensions that it can fit on the back of the animal and not cause discomfort. The backpack weighs about 0.01 grams; however, sensors that collect information about the movement of the bee, body temperature, speed, and other data fit into it. Because of the tiny size of the backpack, it was not possible to install a GPS sensor, however, the location data is collected using antennas located in the garden.

A smart backpack can store up to 30 Kbytes of data, which is enough to record all the information about a bee's activity per day. Scientists analyze the obtained data in order to study one or another type of insect and try to increase the productivity of bees.
