Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology have studied the possibility of using artificial intelligence to communicate with the dead.

As in the sci-fi series The Black Mirror, applications with artificial intelligence may soon allow people to interact with virtual versions of dead people. Indian experts used the Replika AI application, created by Russian programmer Eugenia Kuyda, as the basis of their work. The neural network uses digital dialogues and a person’s correspondence history to create its virtual counterpart. Now researchers Shriya Devadiga and Bhakti Shetty used Replika AI to recreate the twins of the dead, combining figures and stories of friends and relatives.

According to Devadigi and Shetty, they explore the concept of digital consciousness or virtual immortality. This is a hypothetical concept that involves uploading a person’s identity to a computer. In the future, the project may provide for the creation of avatars or robots that will talk and behave in the same way as certain people.
