Scientists have created the first full-body scanner November 21, 2018 | 11:54 / Technological innovations

Scientists from the University of California, together with the Chinese technology company United Imaging Healthcare, created the first scanner capable of producing a three-dimensional image of the entire human body in a few seconds.

The development of a device called the EXPLORER has been conducted for seven years. The device combines two technologies for scanning the human body - computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) tomography, however, according to the developers, it is much more efficient than both.

For example, a 3D scanner is capable of obtaining an image of the entire body of a person in 20-30 seconds, whereas it takes at least 12.5 minutes to conduct PET. The dose of radiation in the EXPLORER is 40 times lower, writes “EurekAlert !.

In addition to receiving a three-dimensional image of the viscera, the scanner is able to track the movement of labeled drugs inside the body. The EXPLORER will be presented on November 24 at the conference of the Radiological Society of North America and will go to the clinic next summer.

Earlier, the laboratory of artificial intelligence Facebook, together with the University of New York, began to develop a neural network that will increase the speed of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tenfold.
