International experience on school informatics investigated July 06, 2018 | 11:47 / Conferences, assemblies

Next scientific seminar of the Training-Innovation Center  of the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS was held. Speaking on the subject “School Informatics: Foreign Experience”, Bahar Ismayilova, the PhD student of the institute, spoke about trends in school informatics. She noted that in recent years, school informatics focused on the teaching of areas such as algorithms, data structures, bases, and initiatives and projects in many countries.

Speaking about the US experience in this area, the speaker noted that “The Computer Science Teachers Association” and “Kentucky Science Teachers Association” provided teachers and pupils with a deeper understanding of computer science, supporting and promoting computer science.

She also noted that informatics in the United States is not included as a mandatory subject matter for most schools in the country, and in many states there is no single standard for the teaching of informatics. Bahar Ismayilova noted that in the last five years, a significant decline in informatics courses has been observed in the United States, and that the number of schools in which informatics is taught as an independent subject decreased by 17% in 2009 and 35% in the number of courses in this subject compared to 2005.

The reporter presented the UK experience and gave information on the report submitted by “The Royal Academy of Engineering”. According to the report, in Britain the material and technical base of schools should be updated, equipped with appropriate technical resources, network security should be provided, as well as knowledge evaluation methods should be revised.

Ismayilova emphasized the existence of deficiencies in the teaching of informatics in many European countries, stressing the necessity of presenting projects, relevant measures and proposals in this direction.

She also briefed the French and Israeli experiences in the field of school informatics and informed about international conferences, specialized journals in this area.

Discussions were held around the report, questions were answered.
