Technologies of augmented reality can soon "come" into medicine: with their help, surgeons will be able to see the patient's internal organs without having to cut them.

Putting on glasses of augmented reality, the surgeon will see a virtual 3D map of the patient's internal organs when he lies on the operating table. The system has already been tested on a surgical dummy, using previously taken data from real people.

Surgeons will also be able to take notes directly on virtual organs to make it easier for them to monitor the operation, says Simon Karger, head of technology development at Cambridge Consultants in Boston, USA. In addition, the doctor can, for example, "isolate" (a virtual marker) a nerve that should be avoided during surgery, or "note" which organ should be removed.
