Google app can reveal the calories in food images June 22, 2015 | 09:31 / Technological innovations

Google is working on revolutionary new technology that can reveal the calories in food images. But it will strip the joy from eating, says Josh Barrie.

There are two primary styles of food porn: kale-based, quinoa-fuelled health fetish food; and large pieces of meat dripping in cheese. It’s the latter I find myself gawping at on the train home.

Google, however, has its eye on these pictures of pleasure. It’s been working on technology called Im2Calories, which, astonishingly, promises to be able to count the calories in images of food. It can analyse even bog-standard Instagram photos (like the ones you take), right down to the number of calories in the condiment you've splashed on the side. There’s no escape.
