Azerbaijan Medical University joins global network roaming service

The Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education continues its targeted activities to expand the infrastructure of the AzScienceNet network and strengthen its role in the development of digital transformation in Azerbaijan.

The implementation and expansion of eduroam (education roaming)—one of the advanced technological services provided by GÉANT  (the Association of European Research and Education Networks)—across the country's research institutes and higher education institutions via AzScienceNet is of vital importance. This initiative plays a crucial role in accelerating the integration of Azerbaijan’s science and education environment into the European Research Area.

Recently, with the support of specialists from the AzScienceNet network of the Institute of Information Technology, the Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU) was successfully integrated into the eduroam service. The installation of the eduroam service at AMU was carried out within the framework of a memorandum of cooperation signed between the university and the Institute of Information Technology. In addition to other key areas of ICT collaboration, the memorandum encompasses the opportunities provided by the GÉANT  Association through AzScienceNet, specifically ensuring access to high-speed internet and the provision of advanced network services.

It should be noted that eduroam is a global network roaming service designed specifically for the international research and education community. The service’s authentication infrastructure covers university faculty and staff, as well as students. It provides easy and secure internet access free of charge at any research or educational institution worldwide, integrated into the system.

Currently, the eduroam service is utilized by more than 6,000 research and educational institutions across 106 countries worldwide. In Azerbaijan, the service has already been implemented in 36 organizations, and efforts are ongoing to install and expand eduroam across other scientific and educational institutions throughout the country.
