In the era of modern globalization and digitalization, preserving the purity of the Azerbaijani language and expanding its application opportunities remains a priority research direction.
Information and communication technologies are increasingly permeating all areas of activity and have now become an integral part of people’s lifestyles. On the other hand, the modern era is characterized by a rapid pace of globalization. This is linked to sharp shifts in the global geopolitical and socio-cultural landscape, the rapid pace of economic development, and the simultaneous rise of production and technology. The acceleration of globalization and intercultural communication is leading to certain changes in natural languages. It is vital to implement necessary measures to protect languages and expand their development and application opportunities during this period.
Afruz Gurbanova, senior researcher and PhD in Technical Sciences at the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education, informed AZERTAC about this.
She noted that during his speech at the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, President Ilham Aliyev set serious tasks for scientists, including the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language and the expansion of its use, alongside various fields of science.
In this regard, the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education is conducting research to support the Azerbaijani language in the virtual space. The research covers areas such as the synthesis of the National Terminological Information System, the formation of the Azerbaijani language ecosystem on the e-government platform, the development of an Intelligent Transliteration System, and issues of linguistic sovereignty on the digital state platform, among others.
"The rapid development of information and communication technologies and the process of global digitalization have fundamentally changed the functional role and social status of language. Language is no longer merely a means of communication but also serves as a strategic pillar of national identity, cultural heritage, and social cohesion. In this context, the free, functional, and technologically fully supported presence of languages on digital platforms has become one of the main directions of global discussions. Issues of preserving and developing language purity are analyzed in the context of modern digital transformations and artificial intelligence technologies. In the era of globalization, the dominant position of resource-rich languages in the digital ecosystem, along with the technological dependence, content scarcity, and risks of digital assimilation faced by low-resource languages, are key topics of discussion. These issues are currently being studied as part of the Institute’s main research priorities," said Afruz Gurbanova.
