Emotion recognition systems proposed to temporarily ban

Emotion recognition systems have proposed a temporary ban. This is stated in the annual report of the AI Now Institute in New York. According to scientists, the technology so far has "little scientific basis", so it should not be used in solutions "that affect the lives of people."

Despite the lack of scientific evidence that cars constantly and correctly recognize people's emotions, this market is already valued at $ 20 billion and is growing rapidly. Now the technology is already being used to evaluate job applicants and people suspected of committing crimes. Moreover, the systems are tested in other areas, for example, in VR headsets, in order to determine the emotional state of athletes.

According to hightech.fm scientists are worried that technology may exacerbate racial and gender inequality. "Regulators must intervene to seriously limit the use of systems, and companies involved in artificial intelligence should stop implementing it," according to AI Now.

In particular, scientists referred to a recent study by the US Psychological Association, during which over two years more than a thousand articles on the definition of emotions were studied. They concluded that to determine emotions, it is not enough to analyze only the person’s face, but much more data is needed.

In its report, AI Now called on governments and businesses to stop using face recognition technology until the risks are reduced and the technology becomes more advanced. Scientists have accused companies that promote such systems of disseminating "systemic racism and misogyny."
