The first artificial intelligence satellite is ready to launch

In a few months, the first European satellite with onboard artificial intelligence will be launched.

According to the developers, the new Earth observation satellite can increase the efficiency of sending data from the planet and back. This revolutionary PhiSat artificial intelligence technology will fly on one of two FSSCat mission cubes. The mission was proposed by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Spain) and developed by a consortium of European companies and institutions. Two small cubesats will collect data using modern dual microwave and hyperspectral optical instruments. The Cubs will also conduct a series of experiments on inter-satellite communications technology.

To demonstrate the potential of artificial intelligence in space, the European Space Agency is working with partners to develop PhiSat to take the mission to the next level. The ship will be Europe's first artificial intelligence in space. The Cubs will make images of the Earth, some of which will not be suitable for exploration due to cloud cover. To avoid transferring these corrupted images to Earth, the artificial intelligence chip will filter them out, selecting only the most suitable ones. A very powerful tool will collect terabytes of data that can be used, for example, to monitor changes in vegetation cover and assess water quality.
