In Greece, creating urban objects from plastic waste using 3D printing

Research and Design Studio The New Raw organized a 3D-printing of urban objects from plastic waste in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Objects are printed using a robot in the laboratory Zero Waste Lab, which works within the project Print Your City.

The goal of the initiative is to show that the urban lifestyle should not harm the environment. In the new laboratory, residents of the city can learn about plastic recycling and saving materials, as well as design objects for areas of the city.

As soon as the design is ready, Print Your City will calculate how much plastic waste is needed to create enough material for 3D printing of the object.

“Plastic can serve for an unlimited time, but people are used to using it once and throwing it away,” says the founders of The New Raw, Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki. “With the Print Your City project, we want to show how plastic can be used to last longer.”

As part of the project, The New Raw team is planning to use four tons of plastic waste.

Residents of the city can submit their own design on the website, which began work in December 2018. More than 3000 different ideas have already been proposed, and the installation of the first objects will begin in the central park of the city from January 2019.
