NASA experts gave the title of the program of the year to the OnSight system, which allows you to virtually go to Mars. The development was not created for entertainment - it helps scientists explore the surface of the Red Planet.
The developers managed to recreate the geological features of Mars using images of the Curiosity rover. Development of the program Jet Propulsion Laboratory NASA, together with Microsoft. Not only scientists, but also ordinary users can evaluate the virtual surface relief of the Red Planet: the OnSight system is available on the Internet.
The American Space Agency has awarded the software with the Software of the Year award. The three-dimensional images that are shown in OnSight help scientists evaluate the structure of geological objects on Mars. Virtual reality will allow you to build routes of the Curiosity rover and evaluate their complexity.
Together with representatives of Google, developers have adapted the program for the Internet. Thanks to this, any user can go on a virtual tour of Mars (the project was called Access Mars).
The system is planned to be used in the Mars 2020 mission. The creators of OnSight are not going to be limited to one planet, in the future they intend to recreate a three-dimensional landscape and other places where it is difficult or impossible for a person to get there.
