The share of smartphones with AI accelerators in 2018 will exceed 30%

In the fourth quarter of 2018, the share of smartphones equipped with accelerators of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the world will exceed 30%, predicts the research company Digitimes Research.

This forecast was made after the release of mobile processors HiSilicon Kirin 980 and Apple A12 Bionic, equipped with built-in AI-chips.

The Kirin 980 is equipped with a dual neural computing module for accelerated execution of AI tasks, and the Apple A12 Bionic is optimized by integrating the operating system and the ARKit 2 platform, resulting in increased performance in the new smartphones iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR.

At the moment, AI-solutions in smartphones are used primarily for image recognition and processing, but in the future, applications of augmented reality will play a major role. In this regard, manufacturers of smartphones and software developers have to create new AI-proposals to attract customers and outshine competitors, analysts say.

It is expected that in October-December 2018 hardware AI accelerators in smartphones will be distributed more than software. The latter are implemented in the form of synchronization with the GPU, DSP and other computing resources included in single-chip systems.
