Korea announced the commercial 3D printing of eye prostheses

The Severance Clinic at Yonse University reported the commercialization of eye prostheses created with 3D printing. Technology has become part of the project of the Ministry of Science of Korea on the technological development of medical devices of a new generation.

Professor of Ophthalmology, Yun Ying-Suk and manufacturer of eye prostheses Baik Seung-Wun developed the technology after three years of research.

Its application was made possible through a partnership between the University and Carima, a company specializing in 3D printers with digital light processing technology. Now the creators have moved to the second stage of the project - commercialization.

According to the agreement between the organizations, the researchers will conduct testing of the safety and suitability of new eye prostheses until 2020. After that, the team of the clinic and Carima will create a special program for providing prostheses to patients from different regions and countries. On the platform it will be possible to get consultations, choose the design of the prosthesis, follow the production and order the delivery.

According to statistics, eye prostheses are required for 60,000 patients in Korea, but only 40,000 people have access to them. The new technology can help solve this problem and make the production process faster and easier.
