Scientists from the United States have developed an artificial analogue of the eye

The new invention was presented by scientists from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University – they created an artificial eye, working on the principle of human, – RIA Novosti reports with reference to The Harvard Gazeette. The device consists of square metal and artificial muscle made of polymers and electrodes.

"This invention is useful not only in ophthalmology. The eye is perfect for upgrading microscopes, cameras with mobile phones and can be mounted in a virtual or augmented reality headset, "says Federico Capasso, professor of applied physics, project head and author of the article.

The properties of a 30-micrometer-thick metal can be controlled with an artificial "muscle" placed around the lens and consisting of transparent electrodes and an elastic dielectric material. On the electrodes, you can apply the desired voltage by squeezing or stretching the lens, so you can change its focus and correct optical defects.

At the moment Harvard Development and Technology Department draws up the documents necessary for the protection of intellectual property and studies the possibilities of commercialization of the invention, but no specific plans for the application of the "eye" have yet been disclosed.
