Russian scientists have created a compact "electronic nose"

Employees of the Laboratory for Space Research in the Field of Technologies, Systems and Processes of MIEM HSE applied fast learning artificial intelligence on the basis of neural networks for odour recognition. This allowed obtaining a patent for a compact electronic nose gadget for recognizing the image of the smell of a wide class of chemicals.

According to the idea, the "electronic nose" will not only distinguish between different gas mixtures but also memorize new smells. Experts plan that the development in the future will facilitate the life of both security services and ordinary citizens.

"Electronic nose" is a gas analyzer, a measuring device for determining the qualitative and quantitative composition of gas mixtures. As noted, Vladimir Kulagin, professor of the MIEM NIU HSE, gas sensors, smells, there are a great many, but they are all set to recognize only one specific smell. The new gadget should be universal and capable of learning.

The proposal of researchers allows achieving high accuracy in the analysis of mixtures. Also, this makes the work of the device comparable to the work of the organs of smelling living creatures that remember new smells and, having met them again, can easily distinguish them.
