While Google thinks about what to do with Glass glasses and Microsoft tries to lower the cost of the incredibly expensive HoloLens AR-headset, the American ophthalmologic company Omega Ophthalmics has developed a very interesting platform with which it will be possible to implant in the eyeball not only various sensors and lenses, But also complex electronic devices capable of integrating augmented and mixed reality directly into the human vision.
The platform was named Omega Gemini Refractive Capsule. It is an elastic container, which is injected under the iris of the eye with a syringe and expands there. Not that the eye implants were anything new. But in this case, scientists went a little further than simply replacing the original lens with an artificial lens. Inside the Omega Gemini container, there is enough space to use it for, for example, automated delivery of drugs to the eyeball, placement of biometric sensors or any other devices. All of them, of course, is introduced into the container by means of a needle. And to correct the sight of a person, a flexible lens is simply injected into the container, which is straightened inside and takes its place.
The creators of the platform invite other researchers to join their development in order to create something truly revolutionary. Nevertheless, no one expects those young people with good eyesight immediately rush to implant in their eyes different gadgets. First of all, the platform is intended for people with vision problems and other diseases. Elderly people will probably have a clear map of the route to the store or home, as with the years many have problems with memory and orientation in space. However, it is possible that the platform will find application in the military sphere. Is this not the dream of the directors in various fantastic fighters?
Below you can see a small video of the platform presentation. If the chatter of a company employee does not interest you, we suggest that you immediately rewind the video to the 2:25 mark. There begins a demonstration of how the whole system works.
