The team of Chinese researchers decided to test the fastest supercomputer in the world, using it to create the largest virtual model of the universe. They called it a "workout" for a machine called Sunway TaihuLight, which processed data for simulation using 10 million processor cores.
According to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post (SCMP), the universe of Chinese scientists is five times larger than the one created in June by astrophysicists from the University of Zurich. True, the Swiss simulation worked 80 hours, and the Chinese - only one hour.
Such simulations help astronomers search for the most attractive regions of space and shed light on the most mysterious components of it - for example, dark matter and dark energy. The Chinese, in particular, recreated on the supercomputer the origin and tens of millions of years of the development of the universe. Unfortunately, they soon had to stop: the team leader Gao Liang (Gao Liang) said that that day Sunway TaihuLight had the tasks of other customers on the turn.
SCMP said that Chinese supercomputers often have serious shortcomings and rarely work at full capacity. Scientists probably found a way to maximize the power of Sunway TaihuLight, as the car reached the limit without any breakdowns.
Now Gao hopes to launch a simulation that begins with the birth of the universe and ends with the current era - that is, a duration of about 13.8 billion years. But first he will have to wait for the appearance of a new supercomputer, which should become 10 times more powerful than its predecessor and earn in 2019.
