Glasses of Augmented Reality will "give" X-ray vision to surgeons

The developed system of augmented reality uses magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography to create a 3D image. Thus, the surgeon, wearing special glasses, will see the virtual organs directly on the patient's body. Technologies of augmented reality can soon "come" into medicine: with their help, surgeons will be able to see the patient's internal organs without having to cut them.

Putting on glasses of augmented reality, the surgeon will see a virtual 3D map of the patient's internal organs when he lies on the operating table. The system has already been tested on a surgical dummy, using previously taken data from real people.

Surgeons will also be able to take notes directly on virtual organs to make it easier for them to monitor the operation, says Simon Karger, head of technology development at Cambridge Consultants in Boston, USA. In addition, the doctor can, for example, "isolate" (a virtual marker) a nerve that should be avoided during surgery, or "note" which organ should be removed.

The Augmented Reality system developed by Carger uses magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography to create a 3D image of the patient's internal organs. The resulting image is transferred to Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality headset software. Thus, the surgeon, wearing glasses, sees virtual 3D-organs directly on the patient's body. В дальнейшем разработчики планируют расширить функционал: например, можно будет включить обратную связь в режиме онлайн, чтобы помочь менее опытным хирургам при проведении сложных операций.

Karger admits that his technology is still at an early stage, and it will be possible to test it on real patients only in a few years. "The image must be very precise so that it can not cause a surgical error," the researcher points out.
