The French postal company DPDgroup received approval from the General administration of civil aviation of the country to use drones to deliver mail. This was reported on the website of the organization.
The test, in which drones are used to deliver mail, are held in many countries, such as Singapore and Australia. Amazon already actively using drones for this purpose, in the United States. However, while the drones would not be used for regular shipping, including from the specifics of the local legislation and the lack of necessary infrastructure.
DPDgroup has been testing drones (hexacopters) for the last two years . In total during this time the spacecraft spent in the air more than 600 hours, and in 2015 held the first demonstration project, in which mail was delivered to representatives of transport authorities of France. During the show, the drone took a parcel weighing 1.5 kgs at 14 kilometers.
Now DPDgroup uses a drone to transport mail over a 15-kilometer route from Saint-Maximin in Purje and La-Saint-Baume. Parcels are delivered to post offices and companies with a special landing pad. Several times a week the drone was only used to transport commercial goods and does not serve at the same individuals.
The maximum range of flight of the hexacopter company is 20 kilometers. The machine can reach speeds to 30 kilometers per hour and carry loads weighing up to three kilograms. To navigate the drone uses GPS and the camera: the image from it is transmitted to the remote operator at the post office. All the electronic systems of UAV is duplicated, it is also equipped with a parachute.
