Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, as well as the HTTP protocol and HTML markup language, believes that his "brainchild" has become a place of the spread of hatred, prejudice and misinformation. The engineer told how to make the Internet a global power for good.

By creating the World Wide Web, Berners-Lee hoped that there would be more useful tools for people, such as OpenStreetMap or Wikipedia. However, after three decades, everything was not so rosy.

“Fraudsters use the Internet to steal personal data, prosecutors use it to intimidate their victims, and malicious political players undermine democracy,” Berners-Lee describes the situation.

Among the measures proposed by the creator of the Internet is the publication by public institutions of public data in open registries, the prohibition of targeted political advertising and ensuring complete confidentiality of personal information, nanonewsnet.ru reports.  Also, one of the main tasks of Contract for the Web is to make the Internet accessible to the whole world.

Berners-Lee initiative has already been supported by the governments of France, Germany and Ghana. The Internet giants Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Google, the DuckDuckGo search engine, the non-profit organizations Reporters Without Borders and the Electronic Frontier Foundation also joined Contract for the Web.
