A method of 3D printing of different types of glass November 19, 2019 | 12:09 / Technological innovations

Scientists from the Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich have created a 3D printing method that allows you to create complex structures from different types of glass without heating the material to a high temperature.

Glass, ceramics and other similar materials are rarely used in 3D printing, because they have a relatively high melting point - from 1,650 ° C to 4,040 ° C. This makes the printing process labor expensive and expensive.

According to hightech.fm, the researchers proposed a solution to the problem - their method involves the use of digital light processing. It consists in creating a blank from a glass precursor before printing, and then conducting high-temperature annealing.

After that, the researchers added cured polymers to the photo solution and illuminated it in the right places. Thanks to this process, a solid object is formed in the liquid solution.

Scientists subjected the subject to pyrolysis, in which the polymer part burned out, but the glass remained. The transparency of the resulting glass is approximately 85%, and the relative density is up to 95%.

Recall that earlier researchers from the University of Wiss at Harvard introduced a new 3D printer that can print objects from eight different materials and switch between them 50 times per second.
