British police will get access to correspondence on Facebook and WhatsApp September 30, 2019 | 04:05 /

US social networks, in particular Facebook and WhatsApp, will have to transmit encrypted messages to UK police users in accordance with a new agreement between London and Washington. It is reported by Bloomberg.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed in October. According to the agency, thanks to this agreement, British law enforcement agencies will receive information in the investigation of particularly serious crimes. At the same time, the US side will not be able to use the information received from Britain in any case, with the exception of those punishable by the death penalty.

In May, the creator of Telegram Pavel Durov said that the WhatsApp messenger was never and will not be safe for users. According to him, the administration of WhatsApp intentionally behaves opaque, so that experts could not convict it of a scornful attitude towards users. “Every time WhatsApp has to fix a critical vulnerability in its application, a new one appears in its place. All of their security problems work like backdoors, ”said Durov.

The businessman suggested that the administration of Facebook directly affects the protection of WhatsApp, forcing developers to leave security holes for the needs of special services. Durov noted that states such as Iran and Russia do not oppose this messenger, which may indicate the cooperation of Facebook and WhatsApp with security forces. He also urged network users to end the period of “greed and hypocrisy” and persuade friends to switch to safer messengers.
