Google invests € 3 billion in data centers in Europe and launches 10 renewable energy projects September 23, 2019 | 03:42 /

Over the next two years, Google plans to invest 3 billion euros in the expansion of its European data centers, said during a visit to Finland, CEO Sundar Pichai (Sundar Pichai).

Thanks to this, the volume of investments of the company in the European Internet infrastructure since 2007 will grow to 15 billion euros.

The plan provides for an additional 600 million euros of investments in the data center in Hamina, resulting in a total investment of 2 billion euros, said Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne at a joint press conference with the head of Google.

Google already has one data center in Hamina, in which it invested 800 million euros, refitting from an old paper mill. In May, the company said it would invest 600 million euros in the construction of a new data center at the same site.

Sundar Pichai noted that this week Google took another big step in its commitment to sustainable development around the world, making the largest ever corporate purchase of renewable energy.

He said that nearly half of the energy produced will be generated in Europe thanks to the launch of 10 renewable energy projects. These agreements will be an incentive for the construction of facilities worth more than 1 billion euros in the new EU energy infrastructure, ranging from a new project for the construction of offshore wind turbines in Belgium to five projects in the field of solar energy in Denmark and two projects in the field of wind energy in Sweden.

In Finland, Google pledges to implement two new wind energy projects that will more than double the capacity of renewable energy sources in the country and ensure almost all electricity consumption in the Finnish data center from local carbon-free sources.
