At the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, they said that they intend to develop superconductors that will replace the semiconductors used now.

Specialists of the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IFTT RAS) are working on the creation of nanostructures for digital and quantum electronics, which will increase the speed of the devices tenfold and increase their energy efficiency. This was announced on Monday by TASS by the head of the study, head of the laboratory of the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor Valery Ryazanov.

Ryazanov said that digital electronic devices of the future, as well as devices in the promising areas of spintronics and quantum electronics, will have dozens of times more speed and energy efficiency indicators than modern gadgets. For example, the speed of processors for computers can grow from 10 Hz to several hundred. This can be achieved by creating special elements based on superconductors that will replace semiconductors in devices, but the new technology has two main drawbacks: the dimensions of the structures obtained are too large, which still cannot be used in compact gadgets, and the lack of a capacious energy-efficient magnetic memory, technologically compatible with existing superconducting circuits, he noted.

Modern semiconductor electronics, which, for example, are used as the basis for servers that store information from the largest search aggregators, cannot be compared in terms of energy efficiency with devices that will operate on the basis of superconductors, the scientist believes.
